Frequently Asked Questions

What default dimensions does this use?

The default is a nominal 2 by 6 board, which has actual dressed dimensions of about 1.5 by 5.5 inches. Enter your own board width and thickness for other lumber sizes.

Why is dry lumber lighter than a green log of the same species?

Kiln drying removes most of the moisture from wood, which meaningfully reduces weight per cubic foot compared to a freshly cut, green log. Use the Log Weight Calculator for green wood.

How does board width and thickness affect the result?

Weight is directly proportional to volume, so doubling either the width or the thickness roughly doubles the weight for the same length and species.
