SAAG Calculator (Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient)
Health & FitnessCalculate the serum-ascites albumin gradient used to determine the cause of ascites.
SAAG
Serum-ascites albumin gradient. Educational reference only, not a substitute for clinical judgment.
Interpretation
General interpretation of the gradient, reported to have roughly 97% accuracy for identifying portal hypertension. High gradient (>=1.1 g/dL) - suggests portal hypertension

Frequently Asked Questions
What is SAAG used for?
SAAG helps determine whether ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen) is caused by portal hypertension, such as from liver cirrhosis or heart failure, or by a non-portal-hypertension cause, such as peritoneal inflammation or cancer.
Why is timing important for this measurement?
Serum and ascitic fluid albumin should ideally be measured from samples taken at the same time, since the body maintains these fluids in dynamic equilibrium and timing mismatches can affect accuracy.
How accurate is SAAG compared to older classification methods?
SAAG has largely replaced the older exudate/transudate classification for ascites, since it more accurately reflects the underlying physiology, with a reported accuracy of around 97% for identifying portal hypertension.
Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?
No. This is an educational reference implementation of the standard SAAG formula, not a substitute for a physicians clinical assessment.
