What makes a trapezoid isosceles?
An isosceles trapezoid has two legs of equal length, and as a result its base angles are equal in pairs, and its diagonals are also equal in length, mirroring the way an isosceles triangle's two equal sides create matching angles.
How is height found from just the bases and leg?
The difference between the two bases, split evenly on each side due to the symmetry, forms the base of a right triangle with the leg as the hypotenuse. The Pythagorean theorem then gives the height as the other leg of that right triangle.
What if the leg is too short for the given bases?
If the leg length is less than half the difference between the two bases, no real isosceles trapezoid can be formed with those measurements, and the height formula would require the square root of a negative number.
