Unit Conversion calculators
To convert arcminutes to degrees, divide by 60 (degrees = arcminutes ÷ 60). An arcminute is one sixtieth of a degree, so the conversion is exact, and the calculator also shows the result in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
Arcminutes, also called minutes of arc, abbreviated arcmin and written with the prime symbol ′, measure small angles in astronomy, navigation, land surveying, optics, eye care, and shooting, where the same unit is called a minute of angle (MOA). Converting them to degrees is useful whenever a formula, map tool, or calculator expects decimal degrees.
Quick answer: 60′ = 1°, 30′ = 0.5°, 15′ = 0.25°, 1′ ≈ 0.016667°, and 90′ = 1.5°.
This page covers arcminutes to degrees only. The related converters below handle the reverse direction, arcseconds, and full DMS coordinates.
How to Convert Arcminutes to Degrees
The formula is: degrees = arcminutes ÷ 60. For a value above 60′, the whole degrees and the leftover minutes are shown separately in the DMS result, so 83′ appears as 1.383333° and as 1° 23′ 0″.
Worked example: 45′ ÷ 60 = 0.75°.
Most geometry tools work in decimal degrees: the Central Angle Calculator returns its angle in degrees, and the Rotation Calculator takes the turn in degrees, so convert arcminutes first.
What Is an Arcminute?
An arcminute (minute of arc) is 1/60 of a degree, 1/21,600 of a full circle, and exactly π/10,800 radians. An arcsecond is 1/60 of an arcminute. The system is sexagesimal, meaning base 60, and degrees, minutes, and seconds for both angles and time come from Babylonian astronomy and timekeeping.
Arcminutes in Shooting (MOA)
Rifle scopes are adjusted in minutes of angle. Because 1 MOA is 1/60 of a degree, it covers about 1.047 inches at 100 yards, 2.094 inches at 200 yards, and so on in proportion. Many shooters round it to 1 inch, and some scopes are built so one click equals exactly 1 inch at 100 yards, so check which convention a scope uses.
Arcminutes to Degrees Table

| 20′ | 0.333333° | 0° 20′ 0″ |
| 30′ | 0.5° | 0° 30′ 0″ |
| 45′ | 0.75° | 0° 45′ 0″ |
| 60′ | 1° | 1° 0′ 0″ |
| 83′ | 1.383333° | 1° 23′ 0″ |
| 90′ | 1.5° | 1° 30′ 0″ |
| 120′ | 2° | 2° 0′ 0″ |
| 600′ | 10° | 10° 0′ 0″ |
Where Arcminutes to Degrees Conversion Is Used
Coordinates are often written with minutes, and mapping software usually wants decimal degrees, so minutes are divided by 60 and added to the whole degrees. Astronomers convert apparent sizes the same way: the full Moon is about 31′ across, roughly 0.52°. For a complete coordinate with seconds, use a DMS converter instead of converting each part by hand.
To see how far a small angle reaches at a given radius, the Sector Area Calculator and the Perimeter of a Sector Calculator return the arc length from a radius and an angle in degrees. The Scientific Calculator handles the arithmetic for longer conversions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you convert arcminutes to degrees?
Divide the arcminutes by 60. For example, 90′ ÷ 60 = 1.5°.
How many degrees is 1 arcminute?
1 arcminute is 1/60 of a degree, about 0.016667°.
Is an arcminute the same as a minute of time?
No. An arcminute is an angle, 1/60 of a degree. A minute of time is 60 seconds. They share a name and the base 60 system, but measure different things.
How many degrees does the minute hand of a clock move per minute?
6 degrees. The minute hand sweeps a full 360° circle in 60 minutes of time, and 360 ÷ 60 = 6. That is a clock question, not an arcminute conversion: one arcminute is only 1/60 of a degree.
What is the difference between MOA and MIL on a rifle scope?
MOA is an arcminute, 1/60 of a degree. MIL on a scope means a milliradian, 1/1,000 of a radian, which is about 3.438 MOA. At 100 meters, 1 MIL covers about 10 cm and 1 MOA about 2.9 cm. Military maps and artillery sometimes use a different mil, 1/6,400 of a circle, so check which one a device means.
Can the result be negative?
Yes. A negative angle is valid and simply means the opposite direction, so -30′ converts to -0.5°. In DMS form the minus sign belongs to the whole angle: -83′ is -1° 23′ 0″, not 0° 37′ 0″ as some converters show.
Can I convert degrees back to arcminutes?
Yes. Use the Degrees to Arcminutes Converter, which multiplies by 60 instead.
