To convert degrees to arcminutes, multiply the angle by 60 (arcminutes = degrees × 60). An arcminute, also called a minute of arc and written with the prime symbol ′, is one sixtieth of a degree, so this conversion is exact.
Arcminutes are used wherever angles are too small for whole degrees to be practical: latitude and longitude, astronomy, optics and eyesight testing, land surveying, and marksmanship, where the arcminute is called a minute of angle (MOA).
Quick answer: 1° = 60′, 0.5° = 30′, 0.25° = 15′, 2° = 120′, and 1.5° = 90′.
This page covers degrees to arcminutes only. The related converters below handle the reverse direction, arcseconds, and full degrees minutes seconds (DMS) notation.
How to Convert Degrees to Arcminutes
The formula is: arcminutes = degrees × 60. Negative angles convert the same way, since the sign only shows direction.
Worked example: 2.75° × 60 = 165′.
To rewrite an angle such as 1.58° in degrees and minutes, keep the whole degree and convert only the decimal part: 0.58 × 60 = 34.8′, so 1.58° = 1° 34.8′. Turning the leftover 0.8′ into seconds (0.8 × 60 = 48″) gives the full form, 1° 34′ 48″.
For angles on a clock face, the Clock Angle Calculator finds the angle between the hands from the hours and minutes, and the Central Angle Calculator works out an angle from an arc length and a radius.
How Many Minutes Are in a Degree?
There are exactly 60 minutes of arc in one degree, and 60 seconds of arc in one arcminute, so a degree holds 3,600 arcseconds. This base 60 (sexagesimal) system goes back to Babylonian astronomy.
Minutes of Arc vs Minutes of Time
A common mix up is whether one degree equals 60 minutes or 4 minutes. Both numbers are real, but they describe different things. As an angle, one degree is 60 minutes of arc. As time, Earth turns 360° in 24 hours, which is 15° per hour, so it takes 4 minutes of time to turn through one degree. This calculator converts angles, so it always uses 60.

Where Degrees to Arcminutes Conversion Is Used
Navigation relies on it: the nautical mile was originally defined as one arcminute of latitude, so each minute of latitude is roughly one nautical mile. Astronomers describe apparent sizes in arcminutes (the full Moon is about 31′ across), and shooters adjust rifle scopes in minutes of angle (MOA).
Small angles add up at a distance: the Sector Area Calculator returns the arc length for any radius and angle, and the Trigonometric Functions Calculator gives sine, cosine, and tangent for an angle in degrees or radians. The Scientific Calculator handles longer calculations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you convert degrees to arcminutes?
Multiply the degrees by 60. For example, 0.75° × 60 = 45′.
How many arcminutes are in a full circle?
21,600: 360 degrees times 60 arcminutes per degree.
What is the symbol for an arcminute?
The prime symbol ′, as in 30′. Where only plain keyboard characters are available, an apostrophe is commonly used instead.
What is MOA?
MOA stands for minute of angle, the name shooters use for an arcminute. 1 MOA covers about 1.047 inches at 100 yards, often rounded to 1 inch, and some scopes are calibrated to exactly 1 inch instead of the true 1.047.
How many arcseconds are in a degree?
3,600, because each of the 60 arcminutes holds 60 arcseconds.
