Frequently Asked Questions
How does decimal-to-DMS conversion work?
The whole number part becomes the degrees. Multiplying the remaining decimal by 60 gives minutes (and a new decimal remainder); multiplying that remainder by 60 again gives seconds.
Why convert to degrees-minutes-seconds at all?
DMS format is the traditional way to express angles in navigation, astronomy, and geographic coordinates (like latitude and longitude), often required for compatibility with older systems or specific technical standards.
How is this different from the reverse converter?
This calculator converts decimal degrees INTO degrees-minutes-seconds. The companion minutes-to-decimal-degrees calculator does the opposite conversion, DMS back into a single decimal degree value.
