This kilopascal converter shows a pressure in kilopascals next to pascals, hectopascals and millibars, megapascals, bar, atmospheres, millimeters and inches of mercury, psi and kilograms-force per square centimeter. Type into any box and the others update as you type.
A kilopascal (kPa) is 1,000 pascals. It is a convenient size for everyday pressures: 100 kPa is exactly 1 bar, and one standard atmosphere is exactly 101.325 kPa. Tire placards, weather instruments and engineering specifications use it, and 1 kPa is about 0.145038 psi.
Negative values are accepted as gauge readings below the surrounding air, down to a full vacuum of about -101.325 kPa. Below that, the other boxes clear. Results show up to six decimal places.
What Is a Kilopascal
A kilopascal is one thousand pascals, the same as one kilonewton per square meter (kN/m²). The prefix kilo means one thousand, so moving between pascals and kilopascals only shifts the decimal point three places: 250,000 Pa is 250 kPa. The symbol is written kPa, with a lowercase k and a capital P because the pascal is named after a person.
To turn kPa into psi, divide by about 6.894757, or multiply by about 0.145038. A tire set to 220 kPa is about 31.9 psi.
kPa to hPa and Millibars
1 kPa = 10 hPa, and a hectopascal is the same as a millibar, so 1 kPa is also 10 mbar. Weather maps outside the US give air pressure in hectopascals: the standard sea-level value of 1,013.25 hPa is 101.325 kPa. To convert hectopascals or millibars to kilopascals, divide by 10.

Kilopascals in Gas and Humidity Calculations
Science and agriculture often work in kilopascals. Vapor pressure deficit, the drying power of air around a plant canopy, is usually given in kPa, and the Vapor Pressure Deficit Calculator returns it that way. The Ideal Gas Law Calculator takes pressure in atmospheres, so divide kilopascals by 101.325 before entering them.
Gas Constant R in kPa
The molar gas constant is about 8.314462618 J/(mol·K), according to NIST. A joule is one kilopascal times one liter, so the same number gives R in L·kPa/(mol·K). In atmospheres, R is about 0.0820574 L·atm/(mol·K).
Gas law calculations also need the temperature in kelvins, and the Temperature Converter converts Celsius or Fahrenheit for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many kPa is 1 atm?
One standard atmosphere is exactly 101.325 kPa, because the atmosphere is defined as 101,325 pascals.
How do I convert kPa to psi?
Multiply kilopascals by about 0.145038, or divide by about 6.894757. For example, 100 kPa is about 14.5038 psi.
Is kPa the same as kN/m²?
Yes. A pascal is one newton per square meter, so a kilopascal is one kilonewton per square meter. Structural loads are often written in kN/m², and the number is the same in kPa.
How many kPa is 1 bar?
1 bar is exactly 100 kPa. That makes bar to kPa one of the easiest pressure conversions: multiply by 100.
Does converting kPa to psi change a gauge reading to absolute?
No. A gauge reading in kPa converts to a gauge reading in psi. To get absolute pressure, add the air pressure around the gauge, about 101.325 kPa or 14.7 psi at standard sea-level conditions.
Can I enter a negative kPa value?
Yes, as a gauge reading below the surrounding air. The lowest possible value is a full vacuum, about -101.325 kPa at standard air pressure, so lower values clear the other boxes.
