The pascal (Pa) is the SI unit of pressure: one newton of force spread over one square meter. It is a small unit. The air around you at sea level presses with about 101,325 pascals, so everyday pressures are usually written in kilopascals or hectopascals instead.
Results show up to six decimal places, so a few pascals entered here can show as 0 in the gigapascal box. Negative values are accepted as gauge readings below the surrounding air, down to a full vacuum of about -101,325 Pa.
What Is a Pascal
A pascal is one newton per square meter, which in SI base units is one kilogram per meter per second squared (kg/(m·s²)). A newton is the force that gives one kilogram an acceleration of one meter per second squared, the relationship the Force, Mass and Acceleration Calculator works out. The unit is named after the French scientist Blaise Pascal (1623 to 1662), as NOAA notes.
The SI Unit of Pressure
The pascal is the SI unit of pressure. It is a derived unit, built from the kilogram, the meter and the second, not one of the seven SI base units. The bar, the standard atmosphere, the torr and psi are not SI units, but each is defined in pascals.
Pascal Prefixes
Because the pascal is small, pressures are usually written with a metric prefix. Each prefix multiplies the pascal by a power of ten.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pascal the same as N/m²?
Yes. One pascal is defined as one newton per square meter, so pascal to N/m² and N/m² to pascal are one to one: 500 Pa is 500 N/m².
How many pascals are in 1 psi?
1 psi is about 6,894.757 pascals. The psi is defined from the pound, standard gravity and the inch, which gives a long decimal in pascals.
Why is the pascal so small?
One newton is the weight of about 102 grams under standard gravity, and a square meter is a large area, so one newton spread over it is a tiny pressure. Air at sea level is about 101,325 pascals, which is why kilopascals and hectopascals are more common in practice.
Why does the gigapascal box show 0?
The converter shows up to six decimal places. A gigapascal is a billion pascals, so anything under 500 pascals is less than 0.0000005 GPa and rounds to 0. The other boxes are not affected.
How do I convert pascals to kPa?
Divide pascals by 1,000. For example, 101,325 Pa is 101.325 kPa.
