Unit Conversion calculators
This megapascal converter shows a pressure or stress in megapascals next to pascals, kilopascals, gigapascals, bar, psi, ksi, kilograms-force per square centimeter, atmospheres and millimeters of mercury. Type into any box and the others update as you type.
A megapascal (MPa) is one million pascals. It suits high pressures and material strength: hydraulic systems, gas cylinders, concrete and steel. 1 MPa is exactly 10 bar and about 145.0377 psi, so a stress of 1 ksi is about 6.8948 MPa.
Negative values are accepted as gauge readings below the surrounding air, down to a full vacuum of about -0.101325 MPa. Below that, the other boxes clear. A stress can be negative in compression, but this page converts pressure readings, so it keeps to the vacuum limit.
What Is a Megapascal
A megapascal is 1,000,000 pascals, or 1,000 kilopascals. The symbol is MPa, with a capital M for mega. Do not confuse it with mPa, the millipascal, which is a billion times smaller. Bending stress, pipe pressure ratings and material strengths are often stated in MPa in metric countries and in psi or ksi in the US. The Bending Stress Calculator returns stress in psi, which this page turns into MPa.
MPa and N/mm²
1 MPa = 1 N/mm². A square meter holds one million square millimeters, so one newton per square millimeter is one million newtons per square meter, which is one million pascals. Engineering drawings and steel tables often write strengths in N/mm², and the number is the same in MPa.
Gigapascals and Young's Modulus
A gigapascal (GPa) is 1,000 MPa. Material stiffness, given as Young's modulus (stress divided by strain), runs to large numbers, so it is often written in GPa. Strain has no unit, so Young's modulus has the same units as pressure, and converting it works the same way: 1 GPa is about 145,038 psi, or about 145.0377 ksi.
To convert GPa to MPa, multiply by 1,000; to convert MPa to GPa, divide by 1,000. The gigapascal box above does both.

Concrete strength is specified in MPa or psi, while the amount of concrete is a volume; the Concrete Cylinder Calculator works out how much a round column or post needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many psi is 1 MPa?
1 MPa is about 145.0377 psi. Multiply megapascals by about 145.04 to get psi.
How many bar is 1 MPa?
1 MPa is exactly 10 bar, since a bar is 100,000 pascals and a megapascal is 1,000,000 pascals.
How many psi is 1 N/mm²?
1 N/mm² is the same as 1 MPa, so it is about 145.0377 psi. Multiply N/mm² by about 145.04 to get psi.
How do I convert ksi to MPa?
Multiply ksi by about 6.894757. For example, 36 ksi is about 248.21 MPa.
What is the difference between MPa and mPa?
MPa is the megapascal, one million pascals. mPa is the millipascal, one thousandth of a pascal. The capital M and the lowercase m differ by a factor of one billion, so the case of the letter matters.
Can I enter a negative MPa value?
Yes, as a gauge reading below the surrounding air, down to a full vacuum of about -0.101325 MPa. Lower values clear the other boxes.
