This calculator converts a temperature in degrees Celsius to Kelvin using the exact formula: add 273.15 to the Celsius value. Kelvin is the SI base unit of temperature, so scientific work, from chemistry lab reports to physics equations, generally expects a Kelvin figure even when the original measurement was taken in Celsius.

The relationship between the two scales is simple because they share the same size of degree: one Kelvin is exactly the same magnitude as one degree Celsius, so a temperature change of 5°C is also a change of 5 K. The only difference is where each scale puts its zero point. Celsius sets zero at the freezing point of water, while Kelvin sets zero at absolute zero, -273.15°C, the coldest temperature that can physically exist.

Because Kelvin can never go below zero, a Celsius value more negative than -273.15°C is not physically possible, and this calculator will not accept one. For the reverse conversion, from Kelvin back to Celsius, see the related converter below.

Celsius to Kelvin conversion table

This table covers common Celsius values, including several below zero, since Celsius readily goes negative even though the resulting Kelvin value never does.

The Celsius to Kelvin formula

To convert Celsius to Kelvin, add 273.15 to the Celsius value. For example, 21.5°C plus 273.15 equals 294.65 K.

To go the other way, from Kelvin back to Celsius, subtract 273.15 instead. For example, 294.65 K minus 273.15 equals 21.5°C. For the Fahrenheit scale in the same view, or all three scales side by side, use the Temperature Converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to convert Celsius to Kelvin?

Add 273.15 to the Celsius value. For example, 20°C plus 273.15 equals 293.15 K.

What is 0 degrees Celsius in Kelvin?

0°C, the freezing point of water, equals 273.15 K.

What is 100 degrees Celsius in Kelvin?

100°C, the boiling point of water at sea level, equals 373.15 K.

Can I convert a negative Celsius temperature to Kelvin?

Yes, as long as it is not colder than -273.15°C, absolute zero. For example, -40°C converts to 233.15 K, still a positive Kelvin value, since 0 K itself is so far below 0°C.

Is a change of 1 degree Celsius the same as a change of 1 Kelvin?

Yes. Celsius and Kelvin use exactly the same size of degree, so a temperature difference is identical in both scales. Only the starting zero point differs.

What is the triple point of water in Kelvin?

The triple point of water, where ice, liquid water, and water vapor coexist, occurs at 0.01°C, which is 273.16 K, slightly above the ordinary freezing point of 273.15 K.

Why is there no negative sign needed for most Kelvin conversions?

Because Kelvin starts at absolute zero, roughly 273 degrees below the Celsius zero point, most everyday and scientific Celsius temperatures convert to a positive Kelvin value even when the Celsius reading itself is negative.

What is room temperature in Kelvin?

Room temperature is commonly defined as around 20 to 22°C, which converts to approximately 293.15 to 295.15 K.
