This calculator converts a temperature in Kelvin to Fahrenheit using the combined formula: subtract 273.15 to get Celsius, then apply the standard Celsius-to-Fahrenheit conversion. It is a less common conversion than Kelvin to Celsius, since Fahrenheit and Kelvin are rarely used together in the same context, but it comes up in US-based scientific and engineering work where a Kelvin measurement needs to be expressed in the country's everyday temperature scale.

Kelvin has no negative values, since 0 K is absolute zero, the coldest temperature physically possible. That floor translates to a fixed minimum on the Fahrenheit side too: 0 K works out to exactly -459.67°F, so no real Kelvin-to-Fahrenheit conversion can ever produce a colder result than that.

For the reverse direction, or the more common Kelvin to Celsius conversion, see the related converters below.

Kelvin to Fahrenheit conversion table

This table runs from absolute zero through common reference points on the Fahrenheit scale.

KelvinFahrenheit
0 K-459.67°F
100 K-279.67°F
200 K-99.67°F
255.37 K0°F
273.15 K32°F
293.15 K68°F
310.15 K98.6°F
373.15 K212°F

The Kelvin to Fahrenheit formula

The combined formula is F = (K minus 273.15) times 9/5, plus 32. For example, 300 K minus 273.15 equals 26.85, then 26.85 times 1.8 equals 48.33, then 48.33 plus 32 equals 80.33°F.

This is really two conversions chained together: Kelvin to Celsius first (subtract 273.15), then Celsius to Fahrenheit (multiply by 9/5 and add 32). Doing it as one combined formula just skips writing out the intermediate Celsius value. To see all three scales side by side, use the Temperature Converter.

When this conversion comes up

Kelvin to Fahrenheit is a genuinely uncommon pairing in practice, since scientific work uses Kelvin and Celsius together, while everyday US measurements use Fahrenheit alone. The real use case is usually a US-based engineer or student translating a scientific instrument reading, a material specification, or a lab result given in Kelvin into a Fahrenheit figure that matches equipment calibrated in the imperial scale, or that is easier to communicate to a general audience.

A useful cross-check

Since Kelvin can never be negative, any Kelvin-to-Fahrenheit result colder than -459.67°F signals an invalid input rather than a real temperature, since that figure is absolute zero itself, the floor of what the Fahrenheit scale can represent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to convert Kelvin to Fahrenheit?

F equals (K minus 273.15) times 9/5, plus 32. For example, 293.15 K converts to 68°F.

What is 0 Kelvin in Fahrenheit?

0 Kelvin, absolute zero, equals -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit, the coldest temperature physically possible on either scale.

What Kelvin value equals 0 degrees Fahrenheit?

0°F equals approximately 255.37 K.

Why is Kelvin to Fahrenheit a two-step formula?

Because Kelvin and Fahrenheit do not share a simple direct relationship the way Kelvin and Celsius do. The formula first converts Kelvin to Celsius by subtracting 273.15, then converts that Celsius value to Fahrenheit using the standard 9/5-plus-32 formula.

What is normal body temperature in Kelvin and Fahrenheit?

Normal human body temperature, about 98.6°F, is approximately 310.15 K.

Can this calculator produce a result colder than absolute zero?

No. Since the Kelvin input cannot go below 0 K, the Fahrenheit result can never go below -459.67°F, the Fahrenheit equivalent of absolute zero.

Is Kelvin to Fahrenheit a common conversion?

It is less common than Kelvin to Celsius, since Fahrenheit and Kelvin are rarely used in the same context, but it is useful for US-based scientific or engineering work that needs a Kelvin reading expressed in Fahrenheit.
