This calculator converts a temperature in Kelvin to degrees Celsius using the exact formula: subtract 273.15 from the Kelvin value. Kelvin is the base unit of temperature in science, so this conversion comes up constantly in chemistry, physics, and engineering, where measurements are taken in Kelvin but need to be understood on the more familiar Celsius scale.

Unlike Celsius and Fahrenheit, Kelvin has no negative numbers. Zero Kelvin is absolute zero, the coldest temperature theoretically possible, where all thermal motion stops. Because of that fixed floor, this calculator will not accept a Kelvin value below zero, and the Celsius result can still be negative even for a small, valid Kelvin input, since 0 K itself equals a very cold -273.15°C.

For the reverse direction, converting a Celsius value into Kelvin, or the Fahrenheit scale instead, see the two related converters below.

Kelvin to Celsius conversion table

This table spans from absolute zero up through common scientific and everyday reference points.

KelvinCelsius
0 K-273.15°C
77 K-196.15°C
100 K-173.15°C
200 K-73.15°C
273.15 K0°C
293.15 K20°C
310.15 K37°C
373.15 K100°C

The Kelvin to Celsius formula

To convert Kelvin to Celsius, subtract 273.15 from the Kelvin value. For example, 300 K minus 273.15 equals 26.85°C.

To go the other way, from Celsius back to Kelvin, add 273.15 instead. For example, 26.85°C plus 273.15 equals 300 K. For the Fahrenheit scale in the same view, or all three scales side by side, use the Temperature Converter.

Understanding the Kelvin scale

Kelvin is named after the Scottish-Irish physicist William Thomson, later known as Lord Kelvin, who published a paper in 1848 proposing an absolute temperature scale. Working from the physics of the time, Thomson calculated absolute zero at approximately -273°C, remarkably close to the modern, precisely measured value of -273.15°C.

Kelvin values are written without a degree symbol, just a plain K, since Kelvin is an absolute scale defined by a true zero point rather than an arbitrary reference like the freezing point of water. That distinction is also why 0 K is a genuine floor: temperature is fundamentally a measure of particle motion, and there is no physical way to have less motion than none at all.

Where Kelvin gets used in practice

Kelvin shows up almost exclusively in scientific and technical contexts rather than everyday weather reports. Cryogenics work (liquid nitrogen boils at 77 K), astrophysics (measuring the temperature of stars and the cosmic microwave background), and thermodynamics calculations all use Kelvin by default, since the underlying physics equations are simpler when temperature can never go negative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to convert Kelvin to Celsius?

Subtract 273.15 from the Kelvin value. For example, 293.15 K minus 273.15 equals 20°C.

What is 0 Kelvin in Celsius?

0 Kelvin, absolute zero, equals -273.15 degrees Celsius. This is the coldest temperature that is physically possible.

Can Kelvin ever be a negative number?

No. Kelvin is an absolute scale with a true zero point at absolute zero, so negative Kelvin values are not physically meaningful. This calculator does not accept a Kelvin input below zero.

Why does Kelvin not use a degree symbol?

Kelvin is written as a plain number followed by K, with no degree sign, because it is an absolute temperature scale defined by a fixed zero point rather than a relative scale like Celsius or Fahrenheit.

What is normal human body temperature in Kelvin?

Normal human body temperature, about 37°C, is approximately 310.15 K.

Who created the Kelvin scale?

The Kelvin scale is named after William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, a Scottish-Irish physicist who proposed an absolute temperature scale in 1848 and calculated absolute zero at approximately -273°C, very close to the modern accepted value.

What is the boiling point of water in Kelvin?

Water boils at 373.15 K at standard atmospheric pressure, equivalent to 100°C.

What Kelvin value counts as room temperature?

Room temperature, typically around 20 to 22°C, works out to approximately 293.15 to 295.15 K.
