This cubic feet converter shows a volume in cubic feet next to cubic yards, cubic inches, US gallons, liters, milliliters and cubic meters. Type a value into any box and every other box updates as you type, so it works in either direction: from cubic yards of soil to cubic feet of bags, or from a fridge's liters to its cubic feet.

Every factor here is fixed by definition. The foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, a yard is 3 feet, and the US gallon is 231 cubic inches, so the converter never relies on a measured or rounded value. Results are rounded only on screen.

If you are starting from a length, width and height rather than a volume, multiply the three sides in feet first, or use one of the volume calculators linked below. The gallons here are US liquid gallons; a UK imperial gallon is about 20% larger.

What Is a Cubic Foot

A cubic foot is the space of a cube 1 foot (12 inches) on each side. It holds 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches, and since a foot is exactly 0.3048 meter it is exactly 28.316846592 liters. The cubic foot is the usual unit in the US for refrigerator and freezer capacity, storage units, moving trucks, firewood, natural gas and bagged soil or mulch.

How Big Is a Cubic Foot

Picture a box 12 inches long, 12 inches wide and 12 inches tall. It holds about 7.48 US gallons of liquid. To find the cubic feet of a box, room or bed from its sides, multiply length × width × height in feet; the Cubic Yards Calculator does this and converts the result for bulk orders, and the Concrete Volume Calculator does it for a slab.

How Many Cubic Feet in a Cubic Yard

There are exactly 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. A yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is a cube 3 feet on each side: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27, as NIST Handbook 44 lists it. Soil, mulch, gravel and concrete are sold by the cubic yard, while bags are labeled in cubic feet, so a cubic yard of mulch is 27 one-cubic-foot bags, or 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags.

How Many Gallons in a Cubic Yard

A cubic yard holds about 201.97 US gallons: 27 cubic feet of about 7.48 gallons each. The exact value is 46,656 ÷ 231, the cubic yard's cubic inches divided by the gallon's. The Mulch and Topsoil Calculator works out the cubic yards for a bed from its area and depth.

How Much Does a Cubic Foot of Water Weigh

About 62.3 pounds at room temperature (20 °C), and about 62.4 pounds near 4 °C, where water is densest. These figures use the density of water from the NIST Chemistry WebBook, 998.207 kg per cubic meter at 20 °C and 999.975 at 4 °C. A cubic foot of water is 28.27 kg at 20 °C.

Weight depends on what fills the space. The Cubic Feet to Pounds Converter gives the weight of a cubic foot of water, milk, flour, sugar, honey or butter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic feet is 3 cubic yards?

81 cubic feet, at 27 cubic feet per cubic yard.

How many cubic yards is 200 square feet at 4 inches deep?

About 2.4691 cubic yards. Four inches is a third of a foot, so the volume is about 66.67 cubic feet, and dividing by 27 gives the cubic yards.

How many 2.2 cubic foot bags make a cubic yard?

About 12.27 bags, so you would buy 13 to fill a full cubic yard.

Is a cubic foot the same as a square foot?

No. A square foot measures area (length × width) and a cubic foot measures volume (length × width × height). To go from square feet to cubic feet you need a depth: 120 square feet at 6 inches deep is 60 cubic feet.

How many liters is 20 cubic feet?

About 566.34 liters, the size of a large refrigerator.
