Unit Conversion calculators
This gallon converter shows a volume in US gallons next to quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, liters, milliliters, cubic meters, cubic feet and cubic inches. Type into any box and every other box updates as you type, so it converts from gallons and back to them from any of the other units.
The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, and the smaller units (quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces) each divide it evenly, as the sections below show. Because the inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, the gallon is also exactly 3.785411784 liters, so the converter never rounds a factor; only the results it shows are rounded.
This page uses the US liquid gallon. The UK imperial gallon is a different, larger unit, and the US dry gallon is a third one, both explained below, together with how much a gallon of water weighs.
How Much Does a Gallon of Water Weigh
A US gallon of water weighs about 8.33 pounds at room temperature (20 °C, 68 °F) and about 8.35 pounds near 4 °C, where water is densest. The weight changes because water expands as it warms. These figures multiply the gallon's exact volume by the density of water from the NIST Chemistry WebBook.
| Water Temperature | Pounds per Gallon | Kilograms per Gallon |
|---|---|---|
| 4 °C (39.2 °F) | 8.345 lb | 3.785 kg |
| 20 °C (68 °F) | 8.33 lb | 3.779 kg |
An imperial gallon of water is heavier, about 10 pounds, because it holds more water. For milk, honey or other liquids, the Gallons to Pounds Converter uses each liquid's own density.
US Gallon vs Imperial Gallon
The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, about 3.785 liters. The UK imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, about 277.42 cubic inches, so an imperial gallon is about 1.2 US gallons. NIST Handbook 44 traces the split: the American colonists used the English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, and in 1824 Britain replaced its wine and ale gallons with the imperial gallon, defined as the volume of 10 pounds of water.
To convert a UK figure, type it into the UK Imperial Gallons box above: 1 imperial gallon shows as about 1.20095 US gallons, and every other box follows. All the other boxes on this page use US measures.
The US dry gallon, 268.8025 cubic inches, is an eighth of a US bushel, a unit for grain and produce rather than liquids. Fuel economy in miles per gallon also differs: the same car shows a higher number in UK miles per gallon than in US miles per gallon, because each imperial gallon is bigger.
How Many Quarts in a Gallon
A US gallon is exactly 4 US quarts. Each quart is 2 pints or 4 cups, so the same gallon is also 8 pints or 16 cups. The UK imperial gallon is 4 imperial quarts too, but an imperial quart is about 1.137 liters against the US quart of about 0.946 liter, so a US gallon is only about 3.33 imperial quarts.
How Many Ounces in a Gallon
A US gallon holds exactly 128 US fluid ounces, 32 in each quart. The US cup is a sixteenth of a US gallon (8 fluid ounces) and the US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon, while the imperial fluid ounce is 1/160 of an imperial gallon. For trips priced by the gallon, the Fuel Calculator works out fuel use and cost.
