Unit Conversion calculators
This converter turns milliliters into liters (ml to l). Enter a value and the result updates as you type. The section "How Many Liters in a Milliliter" below gives the factor and where it comes from.
Small containers, medicine doses and lab measurements are labeled in milliliters, while bigger bottles, fuel tanks and water use are given in liters. Going from mL to liters is a division by a power of ten, so the answer carries no rounding error from the conversion. Outside the US the same units are spelled millilitres and litres.
The result is rounded to 4 decimal places, but the factor behind it never is, so long chains of conversions stay accurate. Type a whole number or a decimal; the conversion table below lists common values.
How Many Liters in a Milliliter
A milliliter is 0.001 liter, one thousandth of a liter. To turn milliliters into liters, move the decimal point three places to the left, adding zeros in front when needed. A US teaspoon is about 4.93 mL, so even a teaspoon is less than a hundredth of a liter.
How to Convert Milliliters to Liters
To convert milliliters to liters, divide by 1,000. For example, 1,200 milliliters equals exactly 1.2 liters.
To go from liters back to milliliters, multiply by 1,000. For example, 3.5 liters equals exactly 3,500 milliliters.

What Is a Milliliter
A milliliter is one thousandth of a liter and the same volume as one cubic centimeter, which is why medical and engine figures often write cc for it. The symbol is mL or ml. Syringes, medicine cups, eye drops, perfume and drink cans are labeled in milliliters; the Milliliters to CC Converter shows the cc form, and the Milliliters to Microliters Converter goes a thousand times smaller for lab work.
Bottle and Can Sizes in Liters
US rules list the bottle sizes allowed for distilled spirits, from 50 mL to 3.75 liters (27 CFR 5.203). Dividing by 1,000 gives each in liters:
| Bottle | Milliliters | Liters |
|---|---|---|
| Miniature | 50 mL | 0.05 L |
| Can or small bottle | 355 mL | 0.355 L |
| Half bottle | 375 mL | 0.375 L |
| Standard bottle | 750 mL | 0.75 L |
| Liter bottle | 1,000 mL | 1 L |
| Large bottle | 1,750 mL | 1.75 L |
A 12 fl oz can holds about 354.88 mL, which its label rounds to 355 mL. To compare prices of two bottle sizes, the Price Per Ounce Calculator works out the better value.

What happens if I enter a negative number?
The result shows a dash. A volume is an amount of space, so it is never below zero; a minus sign in front of a value is usually a typing slip.
