This converter turns liters into milliliters (L to ml). Enter a value and the result updates as you type. The section "How Many mL in a Liter" below gives the factor and where it comes from.

Liters measure drinks, fuel, engine oil and larger containers, while milliliters measure medicine, syringes, perfume and small bottles, so a recipe, a dosing chart or a product label often needs the step between them. Both units belong to the metric system, so the conversion itself adds no rounding at all.

The result is rounded to 3 decimal places, but the factor behind it never is, so long chains of conversions stay accurate. Type a whole number or a decimal; the conversion table below lists common values.

How Many mL in a Liter

There are exactly 1,000 milliliters in a liter. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so a milliliter is a thousandth of a liter, and converting is a move of the decimal point three places to the right, adding zeros at the end when needed: half a liter is 500 mL. Liters vs mL is only a question of scale, since both measure the same thing.

How to Convert Liters to Milliliters

To convert liters to milliliters, multiply by 1,000. For example, 2.4 liters equals exactly 2,400 milliliters.

To go from milliliters back to liters, divide by 1,000. For example, 650 milliliters equals exactly 0.65 liters.

What Is a Liter

A liter is the volume of one cubic decimeter, the space inside a cube 10 centimeters on each side, as listed in NIST Handbook 44. That definition dates from 1964; before it, the liter was the volume of 1 kilogram of water, which made it about 28 parts per million larger. The abbreviation for liter is L or l, and some software writes lt (the Excel CONVERT function accepts all three); outside the US the word is spelled litre. For smaller steps, a centiliter is a hundredth of a liter, and the Milliliters to CC Converter handles labels and syringes marked in cc.

How Big Is a Liter

Liter vs quart: a liter is a little bigger than a US quart, about 1.0567 quarts, and a cube 10 centimeters (about 3.94 inches) on each side holds one liter. A liter of water weighs about 998 grams at room temperature (20 °C), just under a kilogram, by the density in the NIST Chemistry WebBook. The Kilograms to Liters Converter handles other liquids by their density.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many milliliters is 1.75 liters?

1,750 milliliters.

How many milliliters is 1.5 liters?

1,500 milliliters.

How many milliliters is 2 liters?

2,000 milliliters.

How many milliliters is 1.89 liters?

1,890 milliliters.

How do I convert liters to mL in Excel?

Use =CONVERT(A1,"l","ml") with the liters in cell A1, or simply =A1*1000. In the CONVERT function "l" is the liter and the prefix "m" turns it into milliliters; unit names are case-sensitive.

Is a milliliter the same as a cc?

Yes. A milliliter is one cubic centimeter, written cc or cm³, so a 5 cc syringe holds 5 mL.

What happens if I enter a negative number?

The result shows a dash. A volume is an amount of space, so it is never below zero; a minus sign in front of a value is usually a typing slip.
