Unit Conversion calculators
This volume converter turns one amount into 20 units at once. Enter a value, pick the unit it is in, and read it in milliliters, centiliters, deciliters, liters, kiloliters, cubic meters, US teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts and gallons, UK imperial fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons, and cubic inches, feet and yards.
Every unit is stored as a number of milliliters, and each conversion goes through milliliters, so no pair of units needs its own rounded factor. The US units come from the US gallon of 231 cubic inches, the imperial units from the UK pint of 0.56826125 liter, and the cubic units from the inch of 2.54 centimeters. Only the results on screen are rounded.
The cups, spoons and fluid ounces here are US customary measures, not the rounder values printed on US nutrition labels; the table of US, UK and label measures below shows both. A negative value shows a dash, since a volume can't be below zero.
Units of Volume
The units of measurement for volume in this converter, from smallest to largest, with each one's size in milliliters. US customary sizes follow NIST Handbook 44, and the imperial ones the pint in the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985.

What Is Volume
Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space an object takes up or a container holds. It is a length cubed, so it has no base unit of its own: the SI base unit is the meter, and the standard SI unit of volume is the cubic meter derived from it, while the basic metric unit for everyday volumes is the liter, one cubic decimeter, a cube 10 centimeters on each side. Capacity units such as the gallon and the cup were made for liquids and later tied to cubic units, which is why a US gallon is a whole number of cubic inches.
Metric Units of Volume
Metric volume units step by powers of ten: 1,000 milliliters make a liter and 1,000 liters make a cubic meter. A milliliter is one cubic centimeter, which is why medical and engine figures often write cc, as the CC to Milliliters Converter shows. Centiliters (10 mL) and deciliters (100 mL) sit in between, as NIST Handbook 44 lists them, and a kiloliter is 1,000 liters, the same as a cubic meter. Centiliters show up on drink bottles: EU rules set wine bottles at sizes such as 750 mL (75 cL) and spirit bottles at 700 mL (70 cL) (Directive 2007/45/EC). Deciliters are the unit behind lab results such as cholesterol, measured in milligrams per deciliter (MedlinePlus).
US, UK and Label Measures
The same name can mean different amounts. A US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon, about 29.57 mL, while an imperial fluid ounce is 1/160 of an imperial gallon, about 28.41 mL, so the US ounce is about 4% larger. The pint, quart and gallon go the other way: an imperial pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces against 16 US fluid ounces in a US pint, which makes each imperial unit about 20% larger.
| Measure | US Customary | UK Imperial | US Nutrition Label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teaspoon | 4.93 mL | None | 5 mL |
| Tablespoon | 14.79 mL | None | 15 mL |
| Fluid Ounce | 29.57 mL | 28.41 mL | 30 mL |
| Cup | 236.59 mL | None | 240 mL |
| Pint | 473.18 mL | 568.26 mL | Not set |
| Quart | 946.35 mL | 1,136.52 mL | Not set |
| Gallon | 3,785.41 mL | 4,546.09 mL | Not set |
UK law now defines only the imperial pint, 0.56826125 liter; the gallon and quart definitions were removed in 1995 and the fluid ounce in 2000 (UK Weights and Measures Act 1985, Schedule 1), and there is no legal imperial teaspoon, tablespoon or cup. The imperial units in this converter still follow from that pint: 8 pints to the gallon, 2 to the quart, and 20 fluid ounces to the pint. US nutrition labels use the rounded metric values in the last column, set in 21 CFR 101.9.
How to Convert Any Volume Unit
- Multiply the value by the size of its unit in milliliters, from the table of units above.
- Divide by the size of the target unit in milliliters.
- Example: 3 US quarts × 946.352946 = 2,839.058838 mL, and ÷ 4,546.09 gives about 0.624506 imperial gallons.
To estimate in your head, dividing liters by 4 gives US gallons about 5% low, because a US gallon is about 3.785 liters rather than 4. To turn a volume into a weight (a mass) you need the density of what fills it; the Grams to Milliliters Converter does that for common ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many US fluid ounces are in an imperial pint?
About 19.215 US fluid ounces. An imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, and each imperial ounce is about 0.96076 US fluid ounce.
How many liters is 5 imperial gallons?
5 imperial gallons equals exactly 22.73045 liters, since each imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters.
How many cubic feet is 100 liters?
About 3.5315 cubic feet.
Which tablespoon does this converter use?
The US customary tablespoon, half a US fluid ounce. The 15 mL tablespoon used on US nutrition labels is about 1.4% larger.
Can this converter change volume to weight?
No. Weight depends on what fills the space: a liter of water weighs about 998 grams at room temperature, while a liter of cooking oil weighs less. A volume to weight conversion needs the ingredient's density.
