Unit Conversion calculators
This cubic meter converter shows a volume in cubic meters (m³) next to liters, milliliters, cubic feet, cubic yards, US gallons and cubic inches. Type into any box and the rest update as you type, so it converts from cubic meters or back to them from any of the other units.
The cubic meter is the SI unit of volume, used for water meters, concrete, soil, timber, gas and freight in most of the world. Freight companies call it a CBM. Its link to the metric units is a power of ten, and its link to the US units runs through the inch of exactly 2.54 centimeters, so every factor on this page is exact.
The gallons here are US liquid gallons. For a box or a load measured by its sides, multiply length, width and height in meters to get cubic meters, or use one of the calculators linked below.
What Is a Cubic Meter
A cubic meter is the space of a cube 1 meter on each side, about 3.28 feet. It holds exactly 1,000 liters, since a liter is one cubic decimeter and 10 × 10 × 10 cubic decimeters fill the cube. The symbol is m³, often typed m3, and shipping documents write it CBM. Outside the US it is spelled cubic metre.
How Big Is a Cubic Meter
A cubic meter of water fills about 264 US gallon jugs and weighs close to a metric ton, about 998.2 kg at 20 °C by the density in the NIST Chemistry WebBook. It is a little over 35 cubic feet. The CBM Calculator works out the cubic meters of boxes from their sides and quantity.

Cubic Meters and Cubic Yards
A cubic yard is exactly 0.764554857984 cubic meter, because a yard is exactly 0.9144 meter and the volume is that length cubed. Going the other way, a cubic meter is about 1.308 cubic yards. Concrete and soil suppliers in the US sell by the cubic yard, while metric plans give cubic meters, so a plan calling for 6 cubic meters of concrete needs about 7.85 cubic yards on a US order.
The Concrete Volume Calculator works out a slab's volume from its size, and the Cubic Meters to Tons Converter turns a volume of water or another material into tons.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many cubic meters is 500 liters?
0.5 cubic meter, half of the 1,000 liters in a cubic meter.
How many cubic meters is a room 4 by 3 by 2.5 meters?
30 cubic meters: multiply the three sides.
Is m3 the same as CBM?
Yes. CBM is the shipping term for a cubic meter. A carton 60 by 40 by 50 centimeters is 0.12 CBM.
How many cubic yards is 10 cubic meters?
About 13.08 cubic yards.
Is a cubic meter the same as a metric ton?
Only for water, and only roughly. A cubic meter is a volume and a metric ton is a mass. A cubic meter of water weighs close to a ton, but the same space filled with sand or concrete weighs well over two tons.
