To convert decimal hours to minutes, multiply the number of decimal hours by 60. This calculator does it instantly: enter any decimal hour value above and the minutes equivalent updates as you type. For example, 1.75 decimal hours is 105 minutes.

Timesheets, payroll systems, and invoices often record time as decimal hours, such as 7.5 or 1.75, while people think in hours and minutes. The decimal part is a fraction of an hour, not a count of minutes, so 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1 hour 50 minutes. This calculator shows both the total minutes and the hours and minutes breakdown.

Quick answer: 0.25 hours = 15 minutes, 0.5 hours = 30 minutes, 0.75 hours = 45 minutes, and 1.2 hours = 72 minutes (1 hr 12 min).

This page covers decimal hours to minutes only. The related converters further down the page handle the reverse direction and the rest of the time unit family.

How to Convert Decimal Hours to Minutes

The formula is: minutes = decimal hours × 60.

Worked example: 1.75 decimal hours is 105 minutes.

To go the other way, use the Minutes to Decimal Hours Converter, which divides by 60 instead of multiplying.

How to Convert Decimal Hours to Hours and Minutes

Keep the whole number as the hours, then multiply only the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes. For 7.8 hours, the 7 stays as 7 hours and 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes, so 7.8 hours is 7 hours 48 minutes.

If the minutes come out with a fraction, multiply that remainder by 60 again to get seconds. For example, 2.555 hours is 2 hours and 33.3 minutes, which is 2 hours 33 minutes 18 seconds.

In clock notation the same values are written as hours:minutes, so 7.8 hours is 7:48 and 8.75 hours is 8:45.

Converting Decimal Hours in Excel or Google Sheets

If the decimal hours value is in cell A1, the formula =A1*60 returns total minutes. To show it as clock time instead, use =A1/24 and format the cell as a time (for example [h]:mm), since spreadsheets store time as a fraction of a day.

Where Decimal Hours to Minutes Conversion Is Used

Payroll and timesheet software record work time in decimal hours because a decimal multiplies cleanly by an hourly rate: 8.25 hours at $20 an hour is $165.00, while 8 hours 15 minutes needs converting first. State labor departments publish the same conversion as a chart, for example the North Carolina Department of Labor minutes to decimal hours chart. Employees and freelancers convert back to minutes to check a paycheck or a billed invoice, such as a client report showing 3.4 hours, which means 3 hours 24 minutes.
