This seconds converter shows an amount of time in seconds next to milliseconds, microseconds, nanoseconds, picoseconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. Type into any box and the others update as you type, so it converts sec to ms, seconds to minutes and back.
The second is the SI unit of time, and every smaller unit is a power of ten below it, so those conversions never round. Minutes, hours, days and weeks are fixed multiples of the second too. Months and years use the 365.25 day average year.
Results show up to six decimal places, so a few nanoseconds in years can round to 0. To convert a time written as hours, minutes and seconds into seconds, see the method below.
What Is a Second
The second, symbol s, is the SI base unit of time. It is defined by the frequency of the caesium 133 atom: one second is 9,192,631,770 cycles of the radiation from a particular transition of that atom (BIPM). The atomic definition was adopted in 1967, replacing a second defined by the Earth's motions (NIST).
Larger SI multiples exist but are rarely used: a kilosecond is 1,000 seconds, about 16.7 minutes, and a megasecond is 1,000,000 seconds, about 11.6 days.
How to Convert Time to Seconds
- Multiply the hours by 3,600.
- Multiply the minutes by 60.
- Add both to the seconds. For 2:15:30, that is 7,200 + 900 + 30 = 8,130 seconds.
Going the other way, divide by 3,600 for whole hours and take the remainder: 100,000 seconds is 1 day, 3 hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds, or 27.7778 hours in decimal form. The Time Calculator adds and subtracts times written this way.
How Many Seconds in a Week
A week has 604,800 seconds: 7 days of 86,400 seconds each. Timestamps in software count seconds this way, and the Unix Timestamp Converter turns a count of seconds since 1970 into a date.
| Unit | Seconds | Value Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 60 seconds | Exact |
| 1 hour | 3,600 seconds | Exact |
| 1 day | 86,400 seconds | Exact |
| 1 week | 604,800 seconds | Exact |
| 1 month | 2,629,800 seconds | Average |
| 1 year | 31,557,600 seconds | Average |
How Many Seconds in a Month
A 30 day month has 2,592,000 seconds and a 31 day month has 2,678,400. The average month in this converter has 2,629,800 seconds.
Seconds in Smaller Units
Each smaller unit is a thousand times shorter than the one before it, so a second is 1,000 milliseconds.
How Many Microseconds in a Second
A second has 1,000,000 microseconds, written µs. A microsecond is a millionth of a second.
How Many Nanoseconds in a Second
A second has 1,000,000,000 nanoseconds, a billion, and 1,000,000,000,000 picoseconds, a trillion. A nanosecond is a billionth of a second.
