To convert milliseconds to seconds, divide the number of milliseconds by 1,000. This calculator does it instantly: enter any millisecond value above and the seconds equivalent updates as you type. For example, 1,500 milliseconds is 1.5 seconds.

A millisecond (ms) is one thousandth of a second, so every 1,000 ms makes exactly 1 second. Developers see milliseconds constantly (JavaScript timers, API response times, Unix timestamps in millis), and so do gamers, audio engineers, and anyone reading a lap time or a reaction time test result.

Quick answer: 1 ms = 0.001 s, 500 ms = 0.5 s, 1,000 ms = 1 s, and 5,000 ms = 5 s. The result is also shown as minutes and seconds, which helps with long values like 125,000 ms (2 min 5 s).

This page covers milliseconds to seconds only. The related converters further down the page handle the reverse direction and the rest of the time unit family.

How to Convert Milliseconds to Seconds

The formula is: seconds = milliseconds ÷ 1,000.

Worked example: 1,500 milliseconds is 1.5 seconds.

To go the other way, use the Seconds to Milliseconds Converter, which multiplies by 1,000 instead of dividing.

What Is a Millisecond?

A millisecond is a unit of time equal to one thousandth (1/1,000) of a second. The prefix milli means one thousandth in the metric system, the same prefix used in millimeter and milliliter. Its symbol is ms, and it is also informally called a milli or millis, which is why many people search for millis to seconds.

The second itself is the SI base unit of time, defined by the International System of Units using a fixed frequency of the caesium 133 atom (9,192,631,770 oscillations per second). Because the millisecond is defined directly from the second, the 1,000 to 1 ratio is exact, with no rounding.

Milliseconds in Programming and Everyday Timing

Programming is the biggest reason people convert milliseconds. JavaScript functions such as setTimeout and setInterval take their delay in milliseconds, so setTimeout(fn, 30000) waits 30 seconds, and Date.now() returns a Unix timestamp counted in milliseconds. Outside of code, milliseconds show up in monitor response times, audio latency and delay effects (one cycle of a 1 kHz tone lasts exactly 1 ms), camera shutter speeds, and sprint or racing results, where a gap of a few hundred milliseconds can decide a finish.

Avoiding the Integer Division Bug

In languages that divide whole numbers as integers (Java, C, C#, and others), 500 / 1000 evaluates to 0 instead of 0.5, so a millisecond value silently turns into zero seconds. Divide by 1000.0, or convert the value to a decimal type first, to keep the fraction. JavaScript and Python 3 divide as decimals by default, so 500 / 1000 returns 0.5 there.

Milliseconds also come up outside unit conversion: the BPM to Milliseconds Delay Calculator sets delay times from a song's tempo, and the Unix Timestamp Converter turns a Unix timestamp into a readable date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many seconds is 20 milliseconds?

0.02 seconds.

How many seconds is 2 milliseconds?

0.002 seconds.

How many milliseconds are in a minute?

There are 60,000 milliseconds in a minute (60 seconds times 1,000). So 60,000 ms converts to exactly 60 seconds, and 300,000 ms is 5 minutes.

Can a milliseconds to seconds result be negative?

No. A duration cannot be negative, so a value below zero shows a dash instead of a result.

What does millis mean?

Millis is a common informal short form of milliseconds, used especially by programmers, since many timers, logs, and timestamps report time in milliseconds. Converting millis to seconds works exactly the same way: divide by 1,000.

How do I convert milliseconds to minutes and seconds?

Divide by 1,000 to get seconds, then divide the seconds by 60. The whole number is the minutes and the remainder is the seconds. For example, 90,500 ms is 90.5 seconds, which is 1 minute and 30.5 seconds. This calculator shows that breakdown automatically below the main result.
