To convert seconds to milliseconds, multiply the number of seconds by 1,000. This calculator does it instantly: enter any second value above and the milliseconds equivalent updates as you type. For example, 2.5 seconds is 2,500 milliseconds.

The second is the SI base unit of time and the millisecond is exactly one thousandth of it, so the conversion never involves rounding. It comes up most often when a setting, timer, or piece of code expects a value in ms but you think in seconds, such as a 5 second delay that has to be entered as 5,000.

Quick answer: there are 1,000 milliseconds in a second, so 0.5 s = 500 ms, 2 s = 2,000 ms, and 30 s = 30,000 ms.

This page covers seconds to milliseconds only. The related converters further down the page handle the reverse direction and the rest of the time unit family.

How to Convert Seconds to Milliseconds

The formula is: milliseconds = seconds × 1,000.

Worked example: 2.5 seconds is 2,500 milliseconds.

To go the other way, use the Milliseconds to Seconds Converter, which divides by 1,000 instead of multiplying.

How Many Milliseconds Are in a Second?

There are exactly 1,000 milliseconds in one second. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so a millisecond is 1/1,000 of a second by definition, and the ratio is fixed by the International System of Units rather than measured or averaged.

The same pattern continues down the scale: a second is also 1,000,000 microseconds and 1,000,000,000 nanoseconds. Going up, a minute is 60,000 milliseconds and an hour is 3,600,000 milliseconds.

Seconds to Milliseconds in Code

Most programming timers take milliseconds. In JavaScript, a 3 second delay is written setTimeout(fn, 3000), and a 1.5 second animation duration is 1,500 ms. Multiplying seconds by 1,000 before passing the value in avoids the common bug of a timer firing a thousand times sooner than intended.

Where Seconds to Milliseconds Conversion Is Used

Besides programming, seconds to milliseconds conversions are common in audio and video editing (frame and delay timings), networking (ping and latency targets), sports timing, science labs, and physics homework, where reaction times and short intervals are usually reported in ms even though the measuring device shows seconds.

Milliseconds also come up outside unit conversion: the BPM to Milliseconds Delay Calculator sets delay times from a song's tempo, and the Unix Timestamp Converter turns a Unix timestamp into a readable date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many milliseconds is 4.2 seconds?

4,200 milliseconds.

How many milliseconds is 0.75 seconds?

750 milliseconds, three quarters of a second.

Is a second 100 or 1,000 milliseconds?

A second is 1,000 milliseconds. The unit that fits 100 times into a second is the centisecond (10 milliseconds), which is why a stopwatch showing hundredths of a second is counting centiseconds, not milliseconds.

Can a seconds to milliseconds result be negative?

No. A duration cannot be negative, so a value below zero shows a dash instead of a result.

What is the abbreviation for milliseconds?

The standard symbol is ms (lowercase), and the symbol for seconds is s. Sec is a common informal abbreviation for seconds, which is why this conversion is often written as sec to ms or s to ms.
