This time unit converter shows one amount of time in 13 units at once, from picoseconds to decades. Type a value into any box and every other box updates as you type, so it works between any two units of time, such as weeks to seconds or milliseconds to hours.

Every unit is defined from the second, the SI unit of time. Minutes, hours, days, weeks and fortnights are fixed multiples of it, so those results are complete. Months, years and decades vary in a real calendar, so they use the 365.25 day average year, the same average every converter on this site uses.

To convert an amount of time from one unit to another by hand, see the method and the time conversion chart below. This page converts durations; to find the time between two dates or two clock times, or to change time zones, use the tools linked below instead.

Units of Time

Each unit in the converter, from shortest to longest, in seconds. The minute, hour and day come from NIST SP 811; the shorter units are SI prefixes of the second.

Month, year and decade use the 365.25 day average year, so 12 months are exactly 1 year and 10 years exactly 1 decade here.

What Is the SI Unit of Time

The second, symbol s, is the SI base unit of time, defined by the caesium 133 atom (BIPM). The minute, hour and day are not SI units but are accepted for use with them; the week, month and year are calendar units outside the SI.

What Is the Smallest Unit of Time

No official smallest unit of time exists. The SI prefixes reach down to the quectosecond, 10^-30 of a second, since the prefixes ronto and quecto were added in 2022 (BIPM). The Planck time, a constant from physics, is about 5.391247 × 10^-44 seconds (NIST, CODATA 2022), far shorter than anything a clock can measure.

The shortest unit in this converter is the picosecond, a trillionth of a second. Nanoseconds are a billionth of a second and microseconds a millionth.

How to Convert Between Units of Time

  1. Multiply the amount by the number of seconds in its unit, from the Units of Time table.
  2. Divide by the number of seconds in the unit you want.
  3. Example: 3 weeks × 604,800 = 1,814,400 seconds, and 1,814,400 ÷ 60 = 30,240 minutes.

Every unit here is defined from the second, so any pair converts in two steps: multiply by the first unit's seconds, then divide by the second unit's.

Time Zones and Dates Are Different Tools

Many searches for a time converter are about clocks rather than amounts of time. To change 3 PM in New York into London time, use the Time Zone Converter. To find the time between two dates, use the Time Between Dates Calculator, and to add or subtract times such as 1:45 plus 2:30, use the Time Calculator.
