Why 60 Seconds in a Minute

The minute and the second began as divisions of a degree in astronomy. Ptolemy split each degree into 60 parts and each of those into 60 smaller parts, using the base 60 counting of Babylonian astronomers, and those two divisions became the minute and the second, as described in Scientific American.

Payroll and time sheets record minutes as a decimal part of an hour: divide the minutes by 60. Common values:
