Unit Conversion calculators
This kilometer converter shows one length in every common unit at the same time. Type a value into the kilometers box, or into any other box, and all the others update as you type: meters, centimeters, millimeters, miles, yards, feet, inches and nautical miles.
The kilometer (km) is 1,000 meters, the standard unit for road distances, maps, running races and travel in most of the world. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so 1 km is about 0.6214 miles, a little over six tenths of a mile.
Every factor here is exact, taken from the official definitions of the meter, the international foot and the international nautical mile, and the converter shows up to six decimal places. Lengths cannot be negative, so a negative entry clears the other boxes instead of showing a meaningless result.

How Many Kilometers in a Mile
There are exactly 1.609344 kilometers in a mile. The mile is 5,280 feet and the international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so a mile is 5,280 × 0.3048 = 1,609.344 meters, as listed in NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C. Going the other way, 1 kilometer is about 0.621371 miles.
For a quick estimate, multiply kilometers by 5 and divide by 8. That gives 0.625 miles per kilometer, less than 1% above the exact figure, close enough for reading a road sign. For speeds posted in km/h, the KM/H to MPH Converter does the same job for speed.
How Many Meters in a Kilometer
A kilometer is exactly 1,000 meters. The prefix kilo means one thousand, so moving from kilometers to meters only shifts the decimal point three places: 2.5 km is 2,500 m, and 750 m is 0.75 km.
Kilometers and Nautical Miles
A nautical mile is exactly 1.852 kilometers, set by international agreement in 1929 and tied to one minute of latitude, according to NOAA. That makes 1 km about 0.539957 nautical miles. Ships and aircraft use nautical miles, so the extra box above is there for sea and air distances. The Nautical Mile Calculator also works out distance from boat speed and time, and the Light-Years to Kilometers Converter covers distances far beyond Earth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a kilometer longer than a mile?
No. A mile is longer: 1 mile is 1.609344 km, so a kilometer is only about 62% of a mile. A 10 km race is about 6.21 miles.
How do I convert kilometers to feet?
Multiply kilometers by about 3,280.8399. One kilometer is 1,000 meters and one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so 1 km is 1,000 / 0.3048 feet.
Is it kilometer or kilometre?
Both are correct. Kilometer is the US spelling and kilometre is the British and international spelling. The symbol is km either way, and the length is the same.
Can I type into a box other than kilometers?
Yes. Every box is both an input and an output. Type miles, feet or any other unit and the kilometers box and all the others update.
How precise are the results?
The converter uses the exact definitions of each unit and shows up to six decimal places. Round the result to whatever precision your task needs.
