This mm converter shows a length in millimeters next to every other common unit. Type millimeters, or any other unit, and the micrometers, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards and miles boxes update as you type.

A millimeter (mm) is one thousandth of a meter. It is the working unit for engineering drawings, tools, screws, jewelry, rainfall and anything small enough that centimeters are too coarse. The inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm, so converting between the two never needs rounding.

The micrometer box covers lengths a thousand times smaller still, used for filters, coatings and fine tolerances. Lengths cannot be negative, so a negative entry clears the other boxes.

How Many Millimeters in an Inch

There are exactly 25.4 millimeters in an inch. The value was fixed on July 1, 1959, when the United States and other English-speaking nations agreed on a common inch, as NIST explains. To convert, multiply inches by 25.4, or divide millimeters by 25.4.

Why the Exact 25.4 Factor Matters

Some converters multiply by a rounded 0.03937 instead of dividing by 25.4. The difference looks tiny, but 152.4 mm then comes out as 5.999988 inches instead of exactly 6. Over many parts or long runs the error adds up, so this converter always uses the exact definition.

To turn a decimal inch reading back into the nearest fraction, the Decimal Inches to Fraction Converter rounds to 1/16 or finer. Tire widths are given in millimeters, and the Tire Size Calculator works with them directly, while thin coatings and sheet stock are often specified in mils, covered by the Mils to Millimeters Converter.

Micrometers and Millimeters

A micrometer (µm), often called a micron, is exactly 0.001 millimeter, according to NIST Handbook 44. So 1 mm is 1,000 µm, and converting µm to mm means dividing by 1,000. The unit appears in filter ratings, paint and coating thickness and machining tolerances.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many centimeters is 1 mm?

1 millimeter is 0.1 centimeter. There are 10 mm in a centimeter, so divide millimeters by 10 to get centimeters.

How many mm are in a meter?

There are exactly 1,000 millimeters in a meter, since milli means one thousandth.

Is a micron the same as a micrometer?

Yes. Micron is the common name for the micrometer, symbol µm, equal to one thousandth of a millimeter.

How do I write millimeters?

The symbol is mm, in lowercase with no period and no s for plurals: 5 mm, not 5 mms.

Can I type into a box other than millimeters?

Yes. Every box is an input. Type inches, micrometers or meters and every other box, including millimeters, updates.
