How Many Inches in a Foot
There are exactly 12 inches in a foot, and 3 feet in a yard. So a foot is 30.48 centimeters, 304.8 millimeters and 0.3048 meters, all exact. To go from feet to inches, multiply by 12; to go from inches to feet, divide by 12.
The International Foot and the Old US Survey Foot
Until recently, US land surveys used a slightly longer survey foot of 1200/3937 meters, about 0.3048006 meters. NIST declared the US survey foot obsolete from January 1, 2023, so the international foot of exactly 0.3048 meters is now the only foot for all applications.
Decimal Feet to Feet and Inches
Decimal feet and feet and inches are easy to mix up. 5.5 ft is not 5 feet 5 inches; it is 5 feet plus half a foot, and half a foot is 6 inches. To convert, keep the whole feet, then multiply the decimal part by 12 to get inches.
- Take the whole number of feet: in 5.75 ft, that is 5 ft.
- Multiply the decimal part by 12: 0.75 × 12 = 9 in.
- Put them together: 5.75 ft is 5 ft 9 in.
