This distance converter is built for travel and running distances. Type miles, and kilometers, meters, feet, yards and nautical miles update as you type, or start from any other box.

Road signs and maps use miles in the US and the UK and kilometers in most other countries, so those two boxes are at the top. A mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers, which makes a 5K about 3.1 miles and a marathon about 26.2 miles.

Nautical miles are included for boating and flying, where distances are measured in units of 1,852 meters. Distances cannot be negative, so a negative entry clears the other boxes.

How Many Miles Is a 5K

A 5K is 5 kilometers, which is 3.107 miles, so it is usually called 3.1 miles. A 10K is 6.214 miles. To plan a finish time, the 5K Pace Calculator works out the pace you need per mile or kilometer.

How Many Miles Is a Marathon

A marathon is 26 miles 385 yards, exactly 42.195 kilometers. World Athletics explains that the distance came from the 1908 London Olympic course and was standardised in 1921. That works out to 26.219 miles, a little more than the 26.2 often quoted. The Marathon Pace Calculator and the Race Time Predictor turn the distance into a target time.
