Unit Conversion calculators
This meter converter shows a length in meters next to centimeters, millimeters, kilometers, feet, inches, yards and miles. Type into any box and the others update as you type.
The meter (m) is the base unit of length in the metric system, used for room sizes, fabric, sports fields, building heights and most measurements worldwide. Every other metric length is the meter multiplied or divided by a power of ten, which is what makes metric conversions so simple.
Converting to US units uses exact factors too: a foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so 1 meter is about 3.2808 feet. Lengths cannot be negative, so a negative entry clears the other boxes.

How Many Centimeters in a Meter
There are exactly 100 centimeters in a meter and 1,000 millimeters. To convert meters to centimeters, multiply by 100, or move the decimal point two places right: 1.82 m is 182 cm.
How the Meter Is Defined
Today the meter is defined by the speed of light: it is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second, as NIST describes. Because the speed of light is fixed exactly, the meter never drifts, and every other length unit, including the foot and the inch, is defined from it.
Metric Prefixes for Length
Each metric prefix multiplies or divides the meter by a power of ten. Moving one step down the list multiplies by 10.
| Prefix | Symbol | Length in Meters |
|---|---|---|
| kilo | km | 1,000 m |
| hecto | hm | 100 m |
| deca | dam | 10 m |
| (base unit) | m | 1 m |
| deci | dm | 0.1 m |
| centi | cm | 0.01 m |
| milli | mm | 0.001 m |
| micro | µm | 0.000001 m |
| nano | nm | 0.000000001 m |
King Henry Died by Drinking Chocolate Milk
This school mnemonic lists the prefixes in order: King (kilo), Henry (hecto), Died (deca), By (base unit), Drinking (deci), Chocolate (centi), Milk (milli). Each step to the right multiplies by 10 and each step to the left divides by 10. The Decimeters to Meters Converter handles the deci step, the Scientific Notation Converter keeps very large and very small lengths readable, and the Area Converter applies the same idea to square meters.
