This converter turns cubic meters into liters (m3 to liters). Enter a value and the result updates as you type. The section "How Many Liters in a Cubic Meter" below gives the factor and where it comes from.

Water meters, tanks, pools and gas or water bills in metric countries give volumes in cubic meters, while bottles, buckets and cooking use liters. Since a liter is one cubic decimeter, the step between them is a power of ten with nothing to round. Outside the US the same conversion is written cubic metre to litre.

The result is rounded to 3 decimal places, but the factor behind it never is, so long chains of conversions stay accurate. Type a whole number or a decimal; the conversion table below lists common values.

How Many Liters in a Cubic Meter

There are exactly 1,000 liters in a cubic meter. A cubic meter is a cube 10 decimeters on each side, so it holds 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 cubic decimeters, and a liter is one cubic decimeter. NIST Handbook 44 gives the liter this definition, set by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1964.

Before 1964 the liter was the volume of one kilogram of water, which made it about 28 parts per million larger than a cubic decimeter. The difference only matters in old laboratory records.

How to Convert Cubic Meters to Liters

To convert cubic meters to liters, multiply by 1,000. For example, 2.5 cubic meters equals exactly 2,500 liters.

To go from liters back to cubic meters, divide by 1,000. For example, 750 liters equals exactly 0.75 cubic meters.

Water Bills and Tanks in Cubic Meters

A water bill of 12 cubic meters is 12,000 liters, about 3,170 US gallons. A cubic meter of water weighs close to 1,000 kilograms, about 998.2 kg at 20 °C, so a full 1,000 liter tank is a heavy load for a roof or a trailer. The Well Water Volume Calculator gives a well's water in cubic meters, and the Cubic Meters to Tons Converter turns a volume of water or another liquid into tons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many liters is 0.2 cubic meters?

200 liters.

How many liters is 4 cubic meters?

4,000 liters.

Is the liter an SI unit?

No, but it is accepted for use with the SI. The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter, and the liter (spelled litre in British English) is a special name for the cubic decimeter.

What is the abbreviation for liter?

L, or l in some older texts. The capital L is preferred because a lowercase l is easy to mistake for the number 1. A milliliter is mL.

Is a cubic meter the same as a kiloliter?

Yes. A kiloliter is 1,000 liters, which is exactly one cubic meter. The cubic meter is the SI unit, and kiloliter is a name some water utilities use on bills.

What happens if I enter a negative number?

The result shows a dash. A volume is an amount of space, so it is never below zero; a minus sign in front of a value is usually a typing slip.
